On Mar 20, Boston’s well-respected Night Shift Brewing will open another plcae during Lovejoy Wharf, only subsequent to a TD Garden. Perhaps surprisingly, a focal indicate of a trickery won’t be a 10-barrel brewhouse, or a 80-seat waterfront patio, or a eye-popping location. Rather, it’ll be Night Shift Roasting, a brewery’s new on-site roastery and qualification coffee bar.

“We’re treating this thing like we treated a brewery,” pronounced Michael Oxton, one of Night Shift’s 3 cofounders. “We’re going to furnish product in tiny batches, get patron feedback, and grow.”

Although Night Shift is a largest and many new brewery to step into a qualification coffee game, they’re not a first. The trend arguably started with Two Brothers in Chicago, though was popularized by California-based Modern Times Beer, that announced their entrance into a coffee marketplace with a brief blog post on Feb 6, 2013.

“This whole thing is, of course, an experiment, and we’ll have to see how it goes,” wrote owner Jacob McKean.

If it primarily seems bizarre that a brewery competence wish to enter a universe of qualification coffee, a dual industries indeed have a lot in common. Both drink and coffee are informative touchstones, and one can geek out on ingredients, prolongation and season profiles. Additionally, both drink and coffee share some of a same prolongation materials, and breweries can qualification specific profiles to compare those of their beers.

In Columbus, Ohio, Hoof Hearted Brewing recently started roasting their possess coffee. Between withdrawal his aged pursuit as a booze salesman and starting a brewery, Hoof Hearted cofounder Trevor Williams worked during a Columbus-based micro spit called Backroom Coffee Roasters. In late 2016 and early 2017, he upheld his believe on to Brayden Volk, operations manager during a brewery, who now manages a coffee program. Like Oxton and McKean, Volk approached a coffee module during Hoof Hearted out of an seductiveness in a process.

“As we’re fans of all things tasty, we suspicion we’d try a hands during it,” Volk said.

Although there was a upfront cost of a roaster, Hoof Hearted benefitted by already carrying a lot of a claim equipment. For instance, a brewery has a canning line, so they were means to come right out of a embankment with cold decoction in cans. They also had tanks in that to store a coffee, and a glass nitrogen doser so that they could nitrogenate a canned cold brew.

Currently, Hoof Hearted sells their nitrogenated cold decoction in 4 packs of cans, as good as 12-ounce bags of beans. They’ve also expelled several runs of scotch tub aged beans.

“Like a brewery, we’re looking to grow organically and by a lens of peculiarity first,” Volk said, echoing a sentiments of Oxton. When asked what commission of a brewery’s income comes from beans, Volk said, “Probably underneath 5 percent.”

As a qualification drink attention continues to grow, coffee offers a still novel approach to variegate income streams and differentiate. Now, when a qualification drink recipe calls for a further of coffee, consumers know they’re removing a high peculiarity roast, as good as a best probable fry to element a beer.

Modern Times uses 20 pounds of coffee in each 30-barrel collection of their Black House Oatmeal Coffee Stout, and Night Shift creates an Awake Coffee Porter. Hoof Hearted uses coffee in many of their stouts, from Mom Jeans Double Milk Stout to a 14% ABV Fitness Freak. With such a clever concentration on quality, part sourcing, and experimentation, it’s no warn that Modern Times, Night Shift, and Hoof Hearted are all regarded as 3 of a best qualification breweries in a country.
